The humble are the surprised ones

I'm reading in one thousand gifts of being emptied of expectations and self and, in turn, being surprised by joy... overwhelmed by grace.

Here are some excerpts:

"Instead of filling with expectations, the joy-filled expect nothing – and are filled.  This breath!  This oak tree!  This daisy!  This work!  This sky!  These people!  This place!  This day!  Surprise!

… The humble live surprised.  The humble live by joy.

… The humble are the laid-low and bowed ones, the surprised ones with hands open to receive whatever He gives.
He gives them the earth.
The earth.

...Receiving God's gifts is a gentle, simple movement of stooping lower."

"God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth" (Matthew 5:5).

"He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less" (John 3:30).
